Flowing West - the Glacier Movie screens exclusively all year round in the Alpine Adventure Centre on the main street of Franz Josef township, and combines breath-taking New Zealand scenery with a thoroughly entertaining and informative glimpse into the world of glaciers.

The Flowing West movie theatre is a Helimax system made up of a giant movie projector combined with a giant 13m x 8m screen. Movie goers claim it is equivalent to looking directly out of a giant window, giving the viewer the impression and feeling of actually ‘being there’.

The Glacier movie follows the theme of the water cycle and begins from the Tasman sea, where South Westland rain cloud is formed and blown towards the Southern Alps, then falling as now and rain over the mountains and glaciers, flowing westwards through ice cooled rivers back to the Tasman sea.

This world class multi-million dollar production is an educational movie, however the movie is anything but boring! The movie travels at an exciting pace with loads of stunning scenes of New Zealand’s nature at its best.

With seating in the modern theatre for up to 60 people, everyone is guaranteed a comfortable seat with a great view to get the most out of the giant screen and impressive sound system.

The movie may not be an actual helicopter flight, but it’s definitely the next best thing, in fact some movie viewers have compared it as being equal (if not better), to international systems such as the giant IMAX system of the Grand Canyon and Omnimax systems.
