Facts about Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park

"Click Me" - Mt CookAoraki/Mount Cook National Park rises from 600m in the Tasman River bed to 3754m at the summit of Aoraki/Mount Cook, and covers 70,728 hectares. It is a mountainous region of permanent snow and ice, with forty percent of the park under glaciers and 25 named peaks over 3000m. Despite this arduous terrain, recreation occurs throughout the Park from valley floor to the highest peak.

Recreation Activities

"Click Me" - Tasman GlacierWalking By far the most popular activity in the Park is a walk along one of the walking tracks. Visitors can choose from a ten-minute stroll in the village to an easy four-hour valley walk, or a strenuous three-hour climb.

Tramping
the classic alpine routes are a drawcard for both New Zealander's and overseas trekkers. Guided tramping or trekking trips are on offer to visitors - both heli-hiking and multiday tramp and climb trips.

Climbing
on Christmas day 1894 Tom Fyfe, Jack Clarke and George Graham stood on the summit of Mt Cook for the first time, after pioneering a new route up the Hooker valley. The main season for this world-class climbing area is November to April, when climbers have a chance to ascend the
"Click Me" - Fox Glacierhighest peak in Australasia. It is difficult to know how many people climb Aoraki/Mount Cook each year. Climbers do not have to register their climbs and whether they were successful or not. it is thought that 100 to 150 people reach the summit each year.

Hunting Thar were released in the Aoraki/Mount Cook area in 1904 and chamois in 1907. The numbers of these games animals have built up rapidly, and hunting is now available throughout the park. Hunters seeking these animals need to be experienced at alpine travel.

"Click Me" - Heli-SkiingHeli-Skiing and Boarding although there is no established field in the park, there are many opportunities for skiing. Access to suitable areas is usually by helicopter or skiplane, although keen ski tourers can climb to some classic wilderness neve areas. Most skiing in the Park is guided, either heli-skiing or 'ski the glacier' trips on Tasman Glacier, which offers intermediate runs of up to 20km through ice caves and amazing scenery.

Photography when weather permits, many visitors to the Park capture the rosy glows of either a sunset or sunrise on flim. November brings wonderful displays of the Mount Cook buttercup, with its huge dinnerplate leaves and delicate flowers, set among magnificent storms provide ample opportuntiy to capture 'hog's back clouds in stunning formation over the Southern Alps.

Scenic Flights

Scenic Flights
For most visitors a scenic flight is the only way they will get to see and experience the alpine grandeur of the Park. Flights are offered in both ski planes and helicopters. This passive form of recreation allows visitors to the Park to land on a glacier and touch snow at any time of the year. Air access is increasingly used by time-strapped climbers to access high mountain huts, when the weather is suitable, and complete a climb in a weekend. Our aim is to fly our customers safely to the most spectacular alpine regions of New Zealand.
